The Relationship Show with Dr. Wendy & Miss Jenni - Aging Gracefully - ep 18
Wednesday Jan 06, 2016
Wednesday Jan 06, 2016
Episode 18 - “Aging Gracefully - with Starla Fortunato & Sybil Henry"
Two thousand years ago the average Roman had a life expectancy of 22 years.
By 1900 the average American life expectancy was about 50 - but with the advancements in medicine, health care, and technology, in 2015 it takes us almost 80 years to get to where our bodies used to burn out at age 50.
So how do we make those extra years worth it? How do we take the potential Crisis of Aging and turn it into an Opportunity?
Our guests Starla Fortunato and Sybil Henry are two strong insightful women who shared a lot of knowledge on the subject of Aging Gracefully - and it was obvious they’re living it every day.
And I’m not gonna candy coat it… this episode has a LOT of estrogen in it. But because women begin to increasingly outnumber men around the age of 30 - Today there are 128 women to every 100 men over 65, increasing to 196 women for every 100 men by age 80 - because of this, I can’t help but think even our male listeners might find this conversation useful.

Episode 17 - “Pet/Person Relationship: Pt. 2 - with Douglas Green"
Beyond acting as alarm systems, garbage disposals, rodent control, and hunting companions, the pet/person relationship is often a familial bond, with benefits including improvement of health and longevity for both people and animals. Studies are showing that owning a pet can benefit those suffering from a myriad of health and social concerns, including a variety of mental and physical illnesses.
Sure animals might be dirty, tracking mud into our homes, but studies also show that babies raised in households with pets develop less allergies and develop stronger immune systems than those who are not. Therapeutically, animals are used to promote empathy and responsibility in children and adolescents, including those on the autistic spectrum.
In part 2 of this episode, we continue our conversation about the animal/human connection with Douglas Green (http://www.douglasgreenmft.com/), A marriage and family therapist here in Los Angeles, who has written a book about his own special relationship with a pet, titled "The Teachings of Shirelle: Life Lessons from a Divine Knucklehead” (www.CavalleriaPress.com).

Episode 16 - “Person/Pet Relationships: Pt 1 - with Douglas Green"
Animals not only share the earth with us, but are our companions, confidantes, protectors, coworkers, friends, and family... The domestication of cats and dogs runs alongside the evolution of human civilization. To many of us, our relationships with our animals are as significant as any we have with fellow humans, and the loss of them can be devastating.
In the late 1970s, in Northern Israel, archeologists unearthed the buried remains of a human ancestor positioned with its hands resting on a 6-month old wolf pup – the skeletons are dated at over twelve thousand years old. Although we cannot be 100% certain of the circumstances contributing to these skeleton postures, researchers believe it’s further indication of the long existence of an affectionate bond between person and pet.
While dogs have been joining humans on the nomadic hunt long before we settled into agricultural societies, researchers find evidence of feline domestication may be more recent, only about ninety-five hundred years ago - when we started settling into villages and needed our furry nocturnal friends to aid in population control of rodents attracted to our grain storages.
So, what part of our natural selves do animals bring us back in touch with? What lessons of life and death can we learn from our relationships with our pets?
In the following episodes we explore some of the special qualities of the animal/human connection and are joined by Douglas Green (http://www.douglasgreenmft.com/), A marriage and family therapist here in Los Angeles, who has written a book about his own special relationship with a pet, titled "The Teachings of Shirelle: Life Lessons from a Divine Knucklehead” (www.CavalleriaPress.com).

Episode 14 - "2015 Holiday Hell Survival Guide: Part 1"
The holidays can be stressful in a myriad of ways and bring out the worst in people. It seems there are million things to juggle and hundreds of people to please - how do we not get swept away by it all?
With the end of the year holidays upon us, Dr. Wendy & Miss Jenni have some ideas about how to get ahead of it. They are joined by friend-of-the-show and "Singles Correspondent" Ivy Iocano to
reflect on ways we can be loving and giving without sacrificing ourselves or our sanity.
In Part 1, they look at some ways families can approach interfaith and multicultural issues, how one might gracefully dodge those awkward and uncomfortable moments at holiday gatherings, and when to bring a new special someone to those inner circle holiday festivities. So grab your scarves and muffs, as we wander in a Winter Wonderland...
